… And talk to your sons, not just your daughters, about periods.

As a pre-teen, Lizzie McGuire helped young girls like me prepare for those universally awkward coming-of-age moments, like our first kiss or first bra shopping experience. While we never got an episode about Lizzie learning to use a tampon for the first time, it’s fitting that with Hilary Duff’s new partnership with organic feminine care brand Veeda, she’s helping the next generation of girls — including her daughter — feel less embarrassed about the milestone.

Duff’s role as chief brand officer for the plant-based and eco-friendly line of tampons and pads started organically (no pun intended), she says. After stumbling upon natural diapers on Amazon for her daughter, Banks, from Happy Little Camper, she started working with the company and then learned about their sister brand, Veeda. “Honestly, I was using the same tampons that I had since my mom taught me how to use them, so it opened up this whole new world for me,” Duff says. “I was like, Oh my God. I am making all these good choices for my family and for my kids and what we eat and the perfume that I wear and the products that I shower with and I just never really even thought about it.”

Hilary Duff has written her first picture book inspired by her daughter Banks.

The 32-year-old actress revealed ‘My Little Brave Girl’

is inspired by her “breastfeeding journey” with her 22-month-old girl – whom she has with husband Matthew Koma – and she created the book to “encourage both mothers and daughters to reach higher, dream bigger, and approach the world with their hearts wide open.”

The ‘Lizzie McGuire’ star – who also has eight-year-old son Luca with ex-husband Mike Comrie – said on Instagram: “I remember coming home from work around midnight, just in time for my daughter’s dream feed. I hadn’t smelled her all day and it was the first week of a long four months of returning to work.

“Tired and emotional, I held my daughter and remembered the many ways I watched my mother be brave and was encouraged to do the same.

“I sat there in a well of emotion, realising I was close to the end of my breastfeeding journey with my daughter and this was just one of the many ways I was going to watch her grow into a little brave girl.”

Hilary’s book will be available from March 23, 2021 via Random House Kids.

The mother-of-two captioned the video message: “MY LITTLE BRAVE GIRL

I am so excited to officially announce my very first picture book, MY LITTLE BRAVE GIRL, coming March 23, 2021. I wrote this story to encourage both mothers and daughters to reach higher, dream bigger, and approach the world with their hearts wide open. You can pre-order it right now at the link in my bio. thank you @randomhousekids and huge warm hug to @kelseygarrityriley (sic)”

Meanwhile, Hilary recently admitted Luca’s “sweet bond” with his younger sister helped ease her mum “guilt”.

The actress felt guilty when she gave birth to Banks in October 2018, as she knew the tot would need “so much” attention from her, meaning she would have less time to dote on Luca.

She explained: “A newborn needs their mom so much, and so much of that time is sitting and nursing. You’re kind of incapable of physically doing anything else with another child. [My son] Luca was almost seven when I had her. I had a lot of guilt and felt like, ‘Am I giving him enough?'”

But after seeing how the youngster doted on his sister, the ‘Younger’ star was able to “overcome” her worries.

Hilary added: “Their bond was so sweet right away. It helped me overcome that [guilt] because I saw that he was old enough to [understand]. If I could give him a finite, ‘Hey, I have to do this for the next 35 minutes, and then it’s going to be your time with me,’ he could wrap his head around that. The age gap is actually really great. They’re buddies.”

Hilary heeft vorige week haar tweede blog gepost op de website van Happy Little Camper.

Tonight tonight, Mama’s going out!

I’m going to my friend Natalie’s tonight and I’m so excited to see some of my mom friends! We’re sitting outside, social distancing. I’m bringing a pie, Bill Smith’s Atlantic Beach Pie (not helpful for the beach bod) from Food 52 to be specific. What I’m trying to say here is…make some plans and get out of your house (safely)! It’s not the same to catch up on the phone, so put on a cute outfit you’ve been staring at in your closet, swipe some lipstick on your kisser and get out and gab with your friends! You know you need it! Ask your partner for some help or call someone on your quaranteam because your sanity (and your children’s safety… lol) depends on it!

How are you guys feeling about this? Have you found it easy or hard to make space for yourself? The news is so scary to watch and really does a great job of instilling epic fear in us. For example, I had to tell my husband that we weren’t going to open the front door and catch COVID! And even though he knows that he likes to play it extra safe, which I agree with, mostly, but we have to live too!

My post today is mostly for the parentals involved. One thing I’ve gotten better about in quarantine is asking for help which always in my mind equated to weakness or failing somehow. In reality what I’ve learned is there’s strength in asking for help, recognizing you’re overwhelmed, and coming to peace with one of your shortcomings (just kidding we don’t have any of those!). I guess what I’m trying to say is the biggest concern I’ve had during quarantine is making sure my kids’ needs are met. We have found safe ways to be social, they are getting the stimulation they need and meeting emotional needs while growing and getting so big. But what about us?

I recently met with this wonderful reiki healer for some tools on how to help ground me and stop the racing thoughts. She introduced me to a ten-minute walking meditation. If you’re anything like me and meditation sounds like eating a big bowl of steamed vegetables, then this one’s for you! When I’m told to sit still and think of nothing, that’s when I get an infuriating itch…and think of EVERYTHING! If meditation’s too out there for you, (and I’m still not sure if it’s even for me, but I’m going to give it a month to try) keep searching until you find something that’s your thing sis!

Smile, be cautious, be smart, and don’t let the news scare you from feeling the sunshine!

Hilary heeft een blog op de website van haar bedrijf Happy Little Camper. Hier is de eerste blog van eind vorige maand waarin ze praat over haar kinderen en covid-19.

Is your little one leaving a monstrous wake throughout your house with every step they take too??? Are they Peter the Repeater with games or antics that are funny the first 10 times, but once you hit 62 you’ve lost your voice and checked out (I mean how many times do you want me to rip the blanket off of your head and scream Boo at you girl!!!)

These days have been longer than ever! Trying to entertain kids, keeping them clean, keeping them fed, sticking to a bedtime, keeping up with your house, cooking, squeezing in some sort of physical exercise for yourself, all while trying to keep your own mental state stable. Throw in a chatty husband and she’s spent sis (just kidding I love you to death Bubba!) Oh and did I mention make everyone happy and make good memories too! I hope you’ve found ways to cope with the madness of kids, with less helping hands in this covid nightmare. Insert all tips below!

I will say, having an eight year old has been really helpful! He’s adapted to this situation pretty easily and I can’t imagine doing this without him to help alleviate some of the pressure off of me because he will actually play with his little sister, who is six and a half years younger than him! Also he’s just a joy of a human being and our weekly Friday sleepovers where Matt gets booted to the guest room, I hope those never end! Bring it mommy shamers!

While we all love our kids endlessly, every combination of ages comes with its own set of challenges. Right now (hello my opening line), Banks can’t play with something for more than 3-4 minutes at a time and wants a body sitting with her for every minute of the day. And while very adorable and cute, it’s a huge struggle. She’s smack in the middle of her separation anxiety phase. One way that has helped me deal with this has been to get down to her eye level and explain my every move to her; when I have to hop on a call, when I have to pee, when I have to do something for her brother, when I have to cook something, when I have to tend to the dogs, and now chickens…oh what was I thinking! A lot of the time I’ll ask her if she wants to come along to help, and give her the choice, and if not, you guessed it, Trolls…once again! Again, my son, patience of a saint! Hairrrrrr upppppp!!!

We’ve gotten in the habit of popping the TV on first thing in the morning (shout-out Cocomelon!), so by the end of the day we’ve racked up a few hours of tv (how much is too much? are there even rules right now?!) and the guilt starts to ride me hard. My wonderful husband has been taking most morning shifts so I can get some sleep, or get some work done. Because once they see me, I’m all they want for the rest of the day. Mom mom mom mom mom mom mom mom mom. Did I mention I wouldn’t trade this for all of the money in the world?! When I do take the morning shifts I’ve been making a LARGE mug of coffee, bundling up with Bair (Banks), and sitting in the backyard for a foggy morning chat. This gossip sesh has been giving me all the tea and I highly recommend you doing it with your kids. Even though it’s a whole bunch of hjklmuprtocvrwvboptfsdluytvbm! It’s great instagram content (aren’t we all searching for content!), but it’s an even better way to start conversations with your kids! Make sure to leave a pause so they have time to respond! I like to ask questions like…she said what?! Who all was there?! Did you buy it?! How long’s it gonna take?! Basically whatever I’d say to a girlfriend (within reason)! This has provided lots of laughs and has helped me gain perspective that having kids is a long play. These times are absolutely precious and fulfilling, though messy, draggy and hard. Chatting with Banks gives me a glimpse into the future of my girlfriend for life and all the tea we have yet to share!

Squeeze your babies tight because they’re growing in the blink of an eye and we are better because of them. Head up (hair up), we’ll get through this! Hope you’ve enjoyed my brain dump! See you here next week (actually no promises 😉).

xx
