Hilary Duff Bares All About Single Momdom In REDBOOK’s February Issue

These days, Hilary Duff is clearly in command of her personal and professional life. After a split from former hockey player Mike Comrie, the father of her 3-year-old son, Luca, and a long hiatus, she’s back at work: This summer she released her first studio album in eight years, Breathe In. Breathe Out. And she also has a starring role on Sex And The City creator Darren Star’s TV show Younger, in which she plays the work BFF of a newly single mom who lies about her age in order to get a job (Season 2 premieres January 13). In short, this mom has a lot on her plate.

When sitting down with REDBOOK, Hilary had no problem talking about it all—how the tabloids shamed her post-pregnancy body, how she sometimes has severe bouts of mom guilt, and her newfound perspective on marriage after her divorce.

On the way the press treated her post-baby body…“After I had Luca, I went out to, like, the breast-pump store—I was still huge—and I just had a comfortable outfit on. And the next day [in the tabloids] it was like, “Hilary debuts post-baby bod!” And I was like, “That’s not a debut! That’s an errand!” It was such a happy time that honestly I didn’t care; it wasn’t until later that I realized how mean and invasive it was.”

On mom guilt…“It’s hard to say that you really can have it all. I think you can to a certain degree, but fully loaded, pedal-all-the-way-down is tough. You’re missing out on something, either on the career or on the family. When I’m really busy with work, I feel extremely guilty.”

If she’ll ever get married again…“I don’t want to say I wouldn’t get married again, but it’s not important to me. I don’t feel I would need to be married to have another child. If I felt strongly enough toward someone or if someone felt strongly about it, I might say okay. But it’s not essential.”

So you’re in your 20s, trying to figure out your career, find love, snag a decent apartment—and, oh yeah, find some time to actually have a little fun, too. Sound familiar? It’s certainly a feeling most women can relate to—Hilary Duff included. The 28-year-old actress plays the ambitious Kelsey on the TV Land series Younger—and besides giving us major wardrobe envy, her character inspires us to kick butt at work every day. She knows what she wants, and isn’t afraid to go after it—hello, girl power!

For those unfamiliar with the show, it follows 40-year-old mother Liza (Sutton Foster) as she goes through a difficult divorce and tries to re-start her life with a new career in publishing (she and Kelsey quickly become office BFFs)—all while trying to pass as a young woman in her early 20s. “I think this show is raising the question of whether you should push the boundaries a little, do something that makes you feel uncomfortable and not feel like you’re trapped by your age,” Hilary says.

Of course, that daring attitude isn’t without its challenges. “In this season, Kelsey gets a really awesome job upgrade, but crumbles under the pressure,” Hilary explains. “It’s kind of amazing because I think all of us feel the pressures of knowing our worth, knowing what we’re capable of—but also having those days where you don’t feel good enough and you feel like a fraud. So it’s super relatable.”
It’s these relatable characters and situations that have made Younger a hit—but the fabulous clothes don’t hurt, either. And with Darren Star at the helm of the show and his Sex and the City collaborator Pat Field (wo)manning the costume department, we’d expect nothing less.

“The wardrobe on our show is amazing,” Hilary says. “[From a style standpoint] I try to keep Kelsey separate from me, but sometimes our worlds overlap. There’s this pair of boots that I’ve been wearing this season that I have all over my Instagram. I’m obsessed—I hope I get to keep those!”
Since Hilary’s a Hollywood veteran, she’s picked up a style tip or two over the course of her years in the biz. One of her bests? Figuring out what works for your body. “I’m 5’2″, so that’s challenging. Everything I buy has to be hemmed,” she explains. “If it’s a skinny jean, I have to have it shortened so it’s the right length, but also taken in a little on the sides. That’s a huge thing for me. When I see other people [in ill-fitting skinny jeans] I’m like, ‘I should tell them my tailoring trick!'”

And as a working mom to three-and-a-half-year-old Luca, Hilary looks for easy, simple pieces, often browsing Net-A-Porter, MyTheresa, Topshop, and Intermix. At home, she even lets Luca join in on the fun. “I’ll always put two different shoes on in the morning and ask him to pick one. He always picks the one I like too. I’m like, ‘Yes, Luca! That’s the right one!'” Hilary laughs. “I like to have fun with fashion.”

Season 2 of Younger premieres January 13 at 10/9c on TVLand—don’t miss it!
