Hilary Duff on growing up in the spotlight and the Lizzie McGuire reboot
“It’s not like I didn’t sneak off and party and get drunk,” says the actress

“‘Woah! What’s that?!'” Hilary Duff is walking me through her mid-century-modern Hollywood home, doing an impression of her husband, Matthew Koma. She takes me past chic velvet curved sofas towards a stylish monochrome tiled kitchen and explains,“I’ve rearranged the house, like, 19 times.

“Matt will come in and the chairs that were in our bedroom are now in the hallway or there’ll be a new piece of art I’ve bought and he’s like, ‘What is going on? Are you OK?’ And I’m like, ‘I’m just bored!’”

With no sign of lockdown easing in Los Angeles when we speak on a video call five months into the pandemic, the 33-year-old actress and former Disney star is almost out of options.

With filming for the seventh series of her TV show Younger on hold, along with other projects, she’s tried walking meditation in the hills around the home she shares with musician Koma and her two children.

When that didn’t work, Duff took up guitar lessons on Zoom, or rather, hiding from her kids in the bathroom twice a week while she practises old-school theme tunes from films like Batman and Mission: Impossible.

And then, of course, there are the “quarantine distanced dinners” with her best mates, as well as looking after her and Koma’s daughter Banks, two, and her son Luca, eight, from her first marriage.

“There are times where I’m like, ‘I need to go and drink too much wine with my girlfriends.’ You know what I mean? My husband’s like, ‘You go, I’ve got the kids.’ He could be in quarantine for years more!

He’s like, ‘We have everything we need, what’s bad about this?’ I’m a homebody too, but I do need to go out with my girlfriends once in a while.”

Hilary Duff in lockdown is basically all of us. This should come as no surprise to anyone who came of age with Duff as the Disney Channel’s teen queen Lizzie McGuire in the early ’00s.

september 24, 2020   Reacties uitgeschakeld voor Hilary schrijf kinderboek ‘My Little Brave Girl’   Boeken, Geen categorie, Projecten

Hilary Duff has written her first picture book inspired by her daughter Banks.

The 32-year-old actress revealed ‘My Little Brave Girl’

is inspired by her “breastfeeding journey” with her 22-month-old girl – whom she has with husband Matthew Koma – and she created the book to “encourage both mothers and daughters to reach higher, dream bigger, and approach the world with their hearts wide open.”

The ‘Lizzie McGuire’ star – who also has eight-year-old son Luca with ex-husband Mike Comrie – said on Instagram: “I remember coming home from work around midnight, just in time for my daughter’s dream feed. I hadn’t smelled her all day and it was the first week of a long four months of returning to work.

“Tired and emotional, I held my daughter and remembered the many ways I watched my mother be brave and was encouraged to do the same.

“I sat there in a well of emotion, realising I was close to the end of my breastfeeding journey with my daughter and this was just one of the many ways I was going to watch her grow into a little brave girl.”

Hilary’s book will be available from March 23, 2021 via Random House Kids.

The mother-of-two captioned the video message: “MY LITTLE BRAVE GIRL

I am so excited to officially announce my very first picture book, MY LITTLE BRAVE GIRL, coming March 23, 2021. I wrote this story to encourage both mothers and daughters to reach higher, dream bigger, and approach the world with their hearts wide open. You can pre-order it right now at the link in my bio. thank you @randomhousekids and huge warm hug to @kelseygarrityriley (sic)”

Meanwhile, Hilary recently admitted Luca’s “sweet bond” with his younger sister helped ease her mum “guilt”.

The actress felt guilty when she gave birth to Banks in October 2018, as she knew the tot would need “so much” attention from her, meaning she would have less time to dote on Luca.

She explained: “A newborn needs their mom so much, and so much of that time is sitting and nursing. You’re kind of incapable of physically doing anything else with another child. [My son] Luca was almost seven when I had her. I had a lot of guilt and felt like, ‘Am I giving him enough?'”

But after seeing how the youngster doted on his sister, the ‘Younger’ star was able to “overcome” her worries.

Hilary added: “Their bond was so sweet right away. It helped me overcome that [guilt] because I saw that he was old enough to [understand]. If I could give him a finite, ‘Hey, I have to do this for the next 35 minutes, and then it’s going to be your time with me,’ he could wrap his head around that. The age gap is actually really great. They’re buddies.”

Step Inside Hilary Duff’s Cheerful Los Angeles Home
The actor and musician has taken her time creating a tailored, private sanctuary for her family

Hilary Duff installed this oversized bath into her personal bathroom when she first moved into the house. “I take about three baths a week,” she says. “I will even catch up on phone calls and take meetings there, too.”

“A lot of people move to the Hills for the view,” says Hilary Duff, discussing her decision to purchase the 5,260-square-foot Georgian-style Beverly Hills house she has lived in for close to a decade. “But I liked that this home felt really nested. I actually have hedges in my backyard, and then right behind that it’s just this big mountain. I feel like I’m getting this nice, warm hug.”

The actor and musician had been living in L.A.’s Toluca Lake for some time but was looking for something with a bit more privacy, especially since, at the time, she was expecting her first child. “My mom had lived down the street from me then, and every time I would walk down to her house there was this paparazzi waiting outside. It was a nightmare,” she explains.

“I love this couch because even though it seems modern, it also reminds me of the ’70s. I think my next house will be like all ’70s, really funky,” says Duff. (The couch is a custom design by Bespoke Furniture.) “I thought this would be the one room that would be for adults, but my kids freakin’ love hanging out in there. But I don’t mind; that’s what makes a happy home.” A pair of Kelly Wearstler Laurel Lounge chairs, in montage and shell, are a treasured possession. “I feel like I am going to have these until I am 98 years old, a grandma that’s still going be sitting in those fantastic chairs.”
Still, while this new refuge fit the bill in terms of seclusion, it would require a major overhaul. There were these grandiose fountains everywhere. And the buttery-yellow exterior. And these elaborate “super-’80s” wooden floors. A thorough gutting would leave many of the structure’s bones while creating larger and brighter living spaces.

“I’ve remodeled twice since the initial remodel,” says Duff, who is chief brand officer for both Happy Little Camper and Veeda, and stars as Kelsey Peter in Younger on TV Land. “I had a couple of big life changes—a divorce, a second child.” Most recently, she teamed up with interior designers David Ko, of Maison Ko, and Shannon Wollack and Brittany Zwickl, of Studio Life/Style, to ensure that the space would finally feel like her own. “I painted my front door this beautiful blush color. I was ready—to get rid of some of the dark colors, to move away from everything being so tonal, and to lighten up a lot of the furniture.”

Actor-musician Hilary Duff worked with her team from Studio Life/Style to pick the perfect trio of rugs to line the foyer stairway in her Beverly Hills home, an idea she had favorited on Pinterest. From Woven in West Hollywood—a store Duff says, “I lose all my money at”—the vibrant rugs were cut and then sewn together into a singular design. “To lay out the rugs on each step, deciding where to make the cuts was…very, very scary.”
“This house is used by kids,” says Duff, mom to a young boy and toddler girl. “We have found this really nice balance. I care a lot about interior design, and I do like to invest in furniture—but furniture that I feel like I’m going to love and reuse in many different ways, and also that my kids can, like, climb on and beat up a little bit. Now, it feels like our family’s home.”

augustus 25, 2020   Reacties uitgeschakeld voor Tweede Mom Tea Blog verschenen   'Happy Little Camper' & 'Veeda'

Hilary heeft vorige week haar tweede blog gepost op de website van Happy Little Camper.

Tonight tonight, Mama’s going out!

I’m going to my friend Natalie’s tonight and I’m so excited to see some of my mom friends! We’re sitting outside, social distancing. I’m bringing a pie, Bill Smith’s Atlantic Beach Pie (not helpful for the beach bod) from Food 52 to be specific. What I’m trying to say here is…make some plans and get out of your house (safely)! It’s not the same to catch up on the phone, so put on a cute outfit you’ve been staring at in your closet, swipe some lipstick on your kisser and get out and gab with your friends! You know you need it! Ask your partner for some help or call someone on your quaranteam because your sanity (and your children’s safety… lol) depends on it!

How are you guys feeling about this? Have you found it easy or hard to make space for yourself? The news is so scary to watch and really does a great job of instilling epic fear in us. For example, I had to tell my husband that we weren’t going to open the front door and catch COVID! And even though he knows that he likes to play it extra safe, which I agree with, mostly, but we have to live too!

My post today is mostly for the parentals involved. One thing I’ve gotten better about in quarantine is asking for help which always in my mind equated to weakness or failing somehow. In reality what I’ve learned is there’s strength in asking for help, recognizing you’re overwhelmed, and coming to peace with one of your shortcomings (just kidding we don’t have any of those!). I guess what I’m trying to say is the biggest concern I’ve had during quarantine is making sure my kids’ needs are met. We have found safe ways to be social, they are getting the stimulation they need and meeting emotional needs while growing and getting so big. But what about us?

I recently met with this wonderful reiki healer for some tools on how to help ground me and stop the racing thoughts. She introduced me to a ten-minute walking meditation. If you’re anything like me and meditation sounds like eating a big bowl of steamed vegetables, then this one’s for you! When I’m told to sit still and think of nothing, that’s when I get an infuriating itch…and think of EVERYTHING! If meditation’s too out there for you, (and I’m still not sure if it’s even for me, but I’m going to give it a month to try) keep searching until you find something that’s your thing sis!

Smile, be cautious, be smart, and don’t let the news scare you from feeling the sunshine!

-Hilary xx
