The teen pop ruler of the early noughties discusses dropping her first album in a decade, the fate of Lizzie McGuire, and making her long-awaited live return.

Until her comeback show in London last month, actor and pop star Hilary Duff had never sung her most iconic song live. Granted, it’s been 18 years since she last toured, but “What Dreams Are Made Of”—the glitter-doused duet (with her Italian doppelganger) lifted from the most memorable moment of 2003’s The Lizzie McGuire Movie—has been embraced, and occasionally memed, for almost as long as its been around. Not since the angel rolled the stone away has a resurrection felt so culturally important.

Yes, she is back—but this isn’t wholly a throwback event. We might know her for that crop of iconic early acting projects, like Lizzie McGuire, Cheaper By the Dozen, and Agent Cody Banks, but the pop hits that came with them have always felt like her constant. A decade ago, she dropped a record titled Breathe In, Breathe Out, which maybe didn’t quite cut the Duff mustard, even by her own admission. (She’s previously called it “a little clunky”.) So on the new one, Luck… or Something, she’s doing it her way, you could say. In more ways than one: The album’s executive producer is her husband, the record producer and songwriter Matthew Koma, who’s worked on deep cuts for Britney Spears and Shania Twain.

Met een nieuwe reëel op intagram laat Hilary weten aan fans dat haar concerttickets morgen wereldwijd te koop zijn. En hiermee recreëert ze een scene uit haar iconische film ‘A Cinderella Story’ uit 2004. Inmiddels zijn er ook nog meer optredens aangekondigd in in Mexico en Australië.

The 2000s star, relatable as ever, tells us how she balances music, parenthood, and her stellar new album, Luck … or Something

s a former child star, Hilary Duff is often asked how she turned out OK. Maybe it’s because of the 38-year-old actress-singer’s self-described “trad wife” tendencies: She’s happiest at home in Los Angeles, tending to her four children and her backyard chickens, making sourdough bread and crocheting. But the reality is more complicated. “It’s easy to look at me from the outside and be like, ‘She’s so balanced and grounded and has seemed to figure it out,’” she says over Zoom in late January. “But there’s been a lot of ups and downs and struggles.”

She answers the same question with her first album in more than a decade, Luck … or Something, out Feb. 20 via Atlantic. The title derives from the synth-heavy stunner “Adult Size Medium,” where she sings, “How did we get here?/Was it luck or something?” “I am happy with who I am,” she adds. “But the ‘or something’ is really the meat of the answer.”

The last time Duff released new music, in 2015, Barack Obama was president, Mad Men had recently aired its series finale, and she’d just met her future husband, musician-producer Matthew Koma. “We got set up through my A&R person, and we ended up hanging for two hours, just talking about music,” Duff recalls on a second Zoom date, this time with Koma by her side. “Matt sent an email to his manager afterwards and was like, ‘She’s really pretty.’” (“I said, ‘I want to marry her,’” Koma adds.) After dating on and off for several years, they tied the knot in 2019, and have worked closely together ever since.

Koma, 38, says that Duff was always “flirting” with the idea of returning to music, but she began to take it seriously in 2024, after the birth of their youngest daughter, Townes. Her only hesitance was how much the internet has changed culture in the past decade. “Everyone has a way to tell you how they feel about what you make, and that felt scary,” she says. “I was like, ‘Why would I subject myself to this? We have a happy life and amazing kids.’ But obviously, I miss performing, and I desperately miss having that person be in the forefront.”

Vandaag zijn er enkele video’s verschenen van enkele pers interviews die Hilary heeft gegeven toen ze in Londen was voor haar ‘Small Room, Big Nerves’ om haar nieuwe album te promoten.

Er zijn de afgelopen week meerdere album release feestjes aangekondigd waar fans op vrijdag Hilary’s nieuwste album ‘Luck… Or Something’ kunnen beluisteren. Hilary zal zelf niet aanwezig zijn bij alle geplande evenementen, alleen in winkelcentrum The Grove in L.A. zal ze aanwezig zijn met een meet & greet voor fans.

Er zal er ook één gehouden worden in Amsterdam bij de Concerto Record Store, en daar kan je om 10 uur naar het album luisteren en ook een exclusieve editie van haar CD kopen met 7 bonustracks (de Mine versies van eerdere nummers).

Hilary was de afgelopen dagen in Las Vegass voor optreden van haar de Small Rooms, Big Nerves’ tour in het Voltaire Venetian Resort! De setlist was precies het zelfde als in eerdere optredens. Ook tijdens dit concert was man Matthew samen met hun dochters aanwezig. En o.a. ook vriendin Alanna Masterson en ‘Raise Your Voice’ collega/filmoeder Rita Wilson waren van de partij!.
